This week the Fourth and Fifth grades were introduced to a new idea in the Target class.  The second grade will learn about it next week. 

Bonus Time Ticket

I know some of our Target activities are more challenging than others, and there are times you are almost finished when bedtime arrives.  Please fill out a BONUS TIME TICKET to turn in during homework check.  I will hold the ticket until you complete the activity.  This is NOT a homework pass but simply a time extension.  You will not get a stamp for an incomplete assignment if you complete the BONUS TIME TICKET BEFORE CLASS.

Homework: Sept. 27-29

Second/Third Grades: Today was really exciting.  It was fun to listen to our detective guest speaker and try on his handcuffs. (Thanks to the Clark family for inviting Det. Mike to visit.) Use the fingerprint sheet to analyze your fingerprints from today.  We will make a class graph of whorls, loops, and arches.  We almost finished Chapters 5-6 in Chasing Vermeer.  Go ahead with the 6 sentences on the vocabulary sheet.  You are developing an excellent vocabulary.  I was proud of the way you were able to locate the words as we read aloud today.  Third graders need to complete the logic puzzle.

Fourth/ Fifth Grades:       1.  We are studying the role of the medevil church next week.  You will need to dress as a monk or a nun.  A bathrobe, long coat, hooded sweatshirt, or sheet with a belt will be fine.  Don't buy something just for this activity.  2.  Time yourself on the new styled logic puzzle.  Then reflect on how well you solve logic puzzles.  This comment should be written on the back of the puzzle.  3.  Use your spiral to summarize your novel readings.

Homework: Sept. 20-23

Second and Third Grades:  1.  Finish at least half of the Chapter 1-4 vocabulary review sheet.  The more you do the smarter you will be!  Tell someone about the parts of the story we have read so far.  2.  Play Vocabulary Bingo with your Chasing Vermeer words.  Remember you can get the definitions from an earlier post.  Just click on the upload definitions link from last week.  Have a friend callout the definition and you search for the cooresponding word on your board.  3.  Try to visit the public library for a copy of Chasing Vermeer so you can reread the sections if you need help on the vocabulary.  You can also buy a copy if you would like.  It is cheap (less than $4) on Amazon.

Fourth and Fifth Grades:  1.  Complete your spelling sudoku if you requested more time.  2.  Respond to our read aloud in your spiral.  Include a summary and your other thought/connections.  3.  Finish your Feudalism research sheet.

Homework: Sept. 12-16

Second/Third Grades:  1.  Using your vocabulary packet, read each sentence and write the correct vocabulary word from the list for Chapters 3 and 4.  (Download Chasing-vermeer-vocab-definitions)We will finish reading those chapters next week.  Remember, this is the same list of words we previewed in class today.  2.  Write a letter in your spiral notebook explaining a special event. 

Fourth/Fifth Grades:  1.  Spelling Sudoku  2.  Use your spiral notebook to summarize the events of your novel (Ivanhoe or Ella Enchanted).  3.  Transform a quill pen into ______________.

Open House Information

Target Is...

Elementary advanced learning programs consist of Target, a pull-out resource program for gifted-identified students, and Talent Development, a method for identifying and developing talent in all students. Target typically meets one day per week for five segments out of the students’ six-segment day. This program meets the requirements for service to gifted students.

The Target curriculum is interdisciplinary enrichment with a focus on critical thinking skill development and creativity training. Units have been developed by district gifted education staff and include appropriate purchased materials. In addition to unit content, the Target class also provides gifted students with the opportunity to enhance their interpersonal skills with cognitive peers.

Talent Development instruction may be provided in a co-teaching, push-in, or pull-out format. Gifted-identified students may be included in talent development activities. These activities either complement instruction in the core content areas or develop and extend skills which may be applied in the core content areas.

Homework Sept. 6-9

Second and Third Grades:  1.  Transform a magnigfying glass into ___________.  Make sure you elaborate by using many details and work to be original.  2.  Complete the Chapter 1 and 2 sections of your Chasing Vermeer vocabulary packet.  Use the words from this link:  Download CHASING VERMEER Vocab definitions

Fourth and Fifth Grades:  1.  Finish any incomplete time line research so we are ready to present and make our time line booklets next week.  2.  Use the blank paper to transform a sword into _______________________.  Focus on elaboration and originality.  3.  Fourth grade will meet on Friday, Sept. 16 instead of Wednesday.
